A June 27 article on PennLive.com about the retirement of Sr. Romaine Niemeyer, SCC, the last woman religious to head a Catholic hospital in the United States (Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, PA), noted her tremendous contributions to Catholic health care. The article also highlighted a significant change in leadership of Catholic health care institutions.
According to the article, with Sister’s retirement, Saint Luke Institute is the only Catholic hospital in the United States led by a religious. Capuchin Father David Songy, S.T.D., Psy.D., has served as president of Saint Luke Institute since January 2014. Since its founding in 1977, Saint Luke’s has been led by a priest-director (diocesan or religious), with a staff that includes diocesan priests, men and women religious, and lay professionals.
Saint Luke Institute provides integrated psychological, spiritual and physical healing for priests and men and women religious at its main campus in Silver Spring, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC. The Catholic non-profit also offers education online through SLIconnect.org and has a number of affiliated centers that offer a range of care and education: Caritas Counseling Center in Towson, MD; Saint Luke Center in Louisville, KY; St. Louis Consultation Center in St. Louis, MO; and St. Luke’s Centre in Manchester, England.
