About Therapy

How long does therapy last?

Therapy is a unique process for each person, so there is no standard length of time. Treatment length depends on the complexity of your issues, treatment history and the impact the issues are having on your life. On average, therapy is weekly for three months to a year. You may need more or less time depending on the specific issues you wish to address.

What should I look for in a therapist?

You should feel rapport and trust with your therapist. He or she should be experienced working with your issues, conduct him or herself professionally, respect and hear you, respect your time, and provide an understanding of treatment issues and goals.¬†Allow about three sessions to see if a therapist is the right fit. If it is not, consider selecting another therapist, but also pay attention if you find yourself “therapist shopping.”

What should I expect in my initial phone call to a new therapist?

A therapist typically will ask what is bringing you to therapy, your issues and also if you feel suicidal. Don’t be alarmed about this last question. It is a standard precaution. Feel comfortable asking about the cost and insurance.
