Housing FAQs

The religious communities that offer accommodations to our clients are all located within 5 miles of our Silver Spring, Maryland office suite. These communities provide welcoming hospitality, housing, meals, and opportunities for common prayer, including Mass and Liturgy of the Hours.

This allows individuals to interact with each other outside of the clinical environment and connects them to a larger supportive religious community.  We have found that living in community builds camaraderie and facilitates sustained healing for clients.

While SLI does not provide transportation, clients have the option of using public transportation, private car, ride share, or taxi. A typical trip is less than 30 minutes one way.

All members of a client's SLI care team are able to reach out to clients directly at any time as circumstances warrant. Superiors are kept well-informed about client needs on a frequent basis by members of the SLI care team.

If there is a serious medical emergency after hours when an individual is off site, they should contact 911 for emergency medical attention and notify SLI at the provided on-call number.

Both clients and leaders of the local religious houses have access to a 24-hour phone number where they can reach a qualified and licensed on-call SLI health care professional who can respond to the situation as needed. Routine medical care is available during the week through the on-site internist.

No details of the client's care or their involvement at SLI is provided to the religious houses. Clients may disclose this personal information if they wish. Further, SLI only shares the names or locations of the religious houses with ecclesiastical superiors and clients.

The Emmaus Program provides an integrated model of care. Participants experience a level of independence that is a foundational aspect of their healing journey while benefiting from the oversight and support of our program. Living independently within a community of religious women or men fosters the development of interactive and communication skills.

Our rigorous therapeutic program instills positive habits and reinforces the importance of agency and accountability in the healing process. Experience indicates that this is a crucial factor in effective long-term healing and re-integration into ministerial life.

All clients are evaluated prior to entering the Emmaus Program by SLI's professional staff. If the individual needs more intensive treatment, they are recommended for a higher level of care.

As an outpatient program, insurance often pays a portion of the Emmaus Program. Conversely, insurance generally does not cover residential treatment; it will often only do so if clients are harmful to themselves or others. This often limits insurance coverage for residential treatment, making an outpatient program with separate housing often more affordable.
