Integrated Spiritual Care

Invigorating the spiritual life within the mental health care journey

For nearly 50 years, Saint Luke Institute has been a leader in mental health care for clergy and religious. The unique presence of licensed clinical professionals and expert spiritual integrators with decades of experience caring for those who serve the Church highlights the foundational importance we place on care of the person as a whole. This integrated care brings together the best of contemporary medical and psychological approaches with long-standing spiritual practices in the Catholic tradition.

Healing Mind & Spirit

Our team of experienced spiritual integrators works closely with the clinical staff to seamlessly incorporate spiritual care, especially into our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and recovery. Integrated spiritual care is also available to those in individual or group outpatient therapy, and spiritual direction is available on its own, in-person or online, for a modest fee.

This helps those we care for to deepen their relationship with God and invigorate their spiritual life as part of the healing process.

Spiritual integration gives our clients a space to understand how their psychological and emotional life is interwoven with their relationship with God. Sometimes spiritual healing is also necessary, and our experts have decades of experience helping Catholic clergy, religious, laity and others with that transformation.

This integrated spiritual approach flows out of a centuries-old Catholic and broadly Christian tradition of spiritual accompaniment. It involves helping our clients to:

  • Explore how God is at work in their lives
  • Listen for the voice of the Spirit
  • Discern life choices, and
  • Grow toward greater wholeness.

In each meeting, clients are encouraged to initiate conversation about their spiritual experiences, prayer, desires, concerns or struggles as these arise out of the very real context of their daily lives.

Those in IOP have individual spiritual integration sessions weekly. Integrated spiritual care as an outpatient service, or spiritual direction on its own, is offered at our Silver Spring, Maryland and Baltimore/Timonium, Maryland locations, as well as at Saint Luke Center in Louisville, Kentucky. The frequency of outpatient or independent spiritual direction is determined based on individual needs.

A Diversity of Spiritual and Prayer Experiences

As part of our commitment to provide a welcoming experience for all those in our care, new IOP clients in our Silver Spring, Maryland office suite are greeted at welcoming prayer services. Additionally, those completing treatment are celebrated in common prayer as well, so their time in treatment begins and ends communally and prayerfully.

We also host different forms of meditative and quiet spiritual experiences such as centering prayer and a prayerful reading of the Scriptures (Lectio divina), among other opportunities.

We provide weekly group discussions on spiritual topics, as well as periodic days of supervised reflection at an off-site retreat center. Our Silver Spring office suite provides a prayer and meditation room, and the celebration of Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation are regularly available there. Mass is also offered frequently at religious houses where many of our IOP clients reside.
