Posted on: June 30, 2026
A new ministry of Saint Luke Institute (SLI) will inaugurate its efforts with a global virtual event on World Mental Health Day, October 10, 2026. The Art of Aging Gratefully: Learning from Religious Women, will mark the formal start of the Global Institute for Mental Health (GIMH), a ministry of SLI. It will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 pm Eastern time. (Find the time in other time zones here.) The virtual event will lift up the way in which Catholic Sisters worldwide model, resource, and respond to the needs of aging in ways that are holistic, holy, and a reflect a proven model from which everyone in the Church can learn—religious, clergy and lay.
Details, including information about speakers and registration, will be forthcoming at SLI.org/gimh. Those interested may also sign up for email updates or contact us at gimh@sli.org. Continuing education units (CEUs) will be available for registrants.
Part of the event will be dedicated to the formal inauguration of the Global Institute for Mental Health, an initiative spearheaded by SLI President & CEO Rev. Patrick J. McDevitt, CM, PhD, in response to the growing awareness of mental health needs among ministers and throughout the global Church. The GIMH’s focus is building a coordinated, global Catholic initiative on mental health that integrates evidence-based research, clinical practice, spiritual care, and Catholic identity, while strengthening collaboration across regions and nations.
The GIMH includes partnerships with a growing number of Church organizations dedicated to support of mental health, including the International Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministers and DePaul University.
The October 10 date was also chosen for this virtual event, not only because it is World Mental Health Day, but also to coincide with initiatives Pope Leo XIV and the U.S. bishops’ conference to highlight the role of mental health and wellness in the Church and in ministry, including the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network intention for mental health ministry for that month.
