Our staff of clergy, religious and lay professionals understand, respect, and value the vocations of those we serve. Our interdisciplinary team includes psychologists and psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, spiritual formators, nurses, a dietician, a physical therapist, and an art therapist.
Leadership Team
Rev. James Garvey, O.Praem., D.Min.
Fr. Jim Garvey, O.Praem., D.Min., is a member of the Norbertine community (Canons Regular of Prémontré) of Daylesford Abbey in Paoli, Pennsylvania. A board-certified chaplain and trained spiritual director, Fr. Garvey has served as chaplain at several medical facilities and was part of the spirituality staff of a mental health care facility as well as a drug and alcohol treatment center. He directs retreats nationally and is a faculty member at The Catholic University of America, guiding seminarians through their first experiences in ministry.
Fr. Garvey earned a doctor of ministry from The Catholic University of America, a master of divinity and graduate certificate in liturgy from Catholic Theological Union, a graduate certificate in spiritual direction from Fordham University, and a master of arts in theology from Saint Charles Borromeo School of Theological Studies.
Marianne Durgavich, RN
Marianne Durgavich, RN, came to Saint Luke Institute with nursing management experience in several psychiatric settings, most recently at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. Marianne was the client care coordinator and safety and risk manager prior to her present position. She is accredited as a psychiatric-mental health nurse and nurse executive by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center.
Emily Ray, Ph.D.
Emily Ray, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in Maryland and Virginia. She earned her doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and completed her pre-doctoral internship at Springfield Hospital Center in Sykesville, Maryland. Dr. Ray worked as an outpatient therapist in the Caritas Counseling Center, as well as a therapist in the residential program at Saint Luke Institute, prior to being appointed director of clinical services. She has taught graduate courses in psychological assessment and has a particular interest in personality assessment. Dr. Ray also holds a master’s degree in dance-movement therapy from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Joseph Collins, D.O.
Joseph P. Collins, D.O., has been the director of medical services at Saint Luke Institute since 2004. He is a board-certified psychiatrist who received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame, his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and his psychiatry residency training at the Georgetown University Medical Center. He is currently an assistant clinical professor at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. His professional interests include depression, bipolar disorder and psychopharmacology.
Stephen Carroll, Ph.D., LCPC
Stephen Carroll, a licensed mental health counselor, has been a member of the clinical services department at Saint Luke Institute since 2012 and coordinator of the Halfway House program since 2017. He received his doctoral degree in counseling from Loyola University Maryland and a master’s degree in pastoral ministry from Boston College. He served as a visiting professor at Loyola University in the school counseling department and conducted research for Georgetown University’s Woodstock Theological Center. His research on the impact of religion and spirituality on employment attitudes and behaviors was published in the Journal of Mental Health, Religion, and Culture. He has researched the role of religion and spirituality on employment attitudes and behaviors and recently developed a chapter on this topic for the American Psychological Association’s Handbook of the Psychology of Religion and Spirituality.
Michelle Short
Michelle Short has held the position of Admissions and Client Services Coordinator for Saint Luke Institute for over 30 years. She brings expert knowledge in the fields of human resources, quality improvement and administration. In her roles, she has worked externally with bishops, superiors and vicars and internally with management and executive leadership.
